WFMW: Self-Serve Snacks

Confession: I'm kinda lazy.

Or maybe I'm kinda burned out.

Either way, I recently started getting so completely, utterly, sick and tired of hearing these two words: I'm hungry. Seeing it typed out like that just doesn't do it justice. It always sounds more like this: I'm huuuuungryyyyyyyyyy....

Why do I dislike those words so much? I don't really understand. I'm afraid to admit that it's because hearing those words means I have to feed my kids. And I don't like feeding my kids.

Whoa. That sounded bad. Let me rephrase that...

I don't particularly enjoy preparing meal after meal after meal for my kids. Every. Single. Day.

Yeah, that sounds a lot less abusive and neglectful.

Anyway, I had an epiphany a while back, and it has worked so well that I thought I'd share it with y'all.

[Note to self: you are NOT from the south, and therefore canNOT pull off saying "y'all". Don't do it again. Ever.]

Snack drawers! And snack tubs!

Each child has their own drawer (and their own tub in the fridge for perishable snacks). I fill it with enough snacks to give them 2 snacks per day until the day I get groceries and refill the drawers again. At this point, I've literally given them free reign over their snack drawers. If they want to eat all their snacks in one day, fine. But then they get no more until grocery day.

[I would recommend NOT going this route, because one week two of my kids ate 11 of their 14 snacks within a matter of hours. (I can't make this stuff up folks.) Let's just say I heard "Mooooommyyyyy! Can you wipe my buuuuuuttttt?" being yelled from the bathroom a lot that day.]

Anyway, I may change the "rules" so that they can only take a snack after they've asked permission, but either way, self-serve snacks work for me!

That is a GREAT idea Danielle! I am going to try that for sure! This will help too so that he doesn't eat the things I buy him that are for his school lunches!

I like this . . My daughter is only two but this could really work for us. She likes being able to do her own thing, pick her own snacks. I am going to run in by my husband and sees what he thinks!
